First World War resources

2014 marks the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. We hold many objects relating to the war, including photographs, posters and local periodicals of the time. Many of these have been digitised and can be downloaded for free and re-used for non-commercial purposes. These can be found in the First World War Resources section of our Image Store.

These objects include:

  • Photographs, including images of the famous Indian military hospital in the Royal Pavilion
  • Posters, such as recruitment posters issued by the British government
  • Periodicals, including the Brighton and Hove South Sussex Graphic, an illlustated local newspaper
  • Books and scrapbooks, which document local stories of the war, such as the work of the Belgian Relief Fund

More material will be digitsed and made available throughout the year.

Apps and social media

To accompany our programme of First World War exhibitions in 2014, you can discover more stories online.

  • Our War Stories Tumblr is a daily blog about the war, what it meant to Brighton & Hove, and our work behind the scenes to mark the centenary.
  • Our free Story Drop app offers a tour of the buildings and sites used as hospitals in WWI Brighton. Called Dr Brighton's War, it expands the exhibition on brighton seafront until 31 August.
