Visitors Register from the Prince's Hotel, Brighton, 1938

Holidays

The health benefits of seawater cures helped Brighton develop as a fashionable resort. The sea also influenced the development of Hove although it has never attracted as many visitors as Brighton.

During the early twentieth century Hove liked to think it attracted a high class of tourist. Its most famous visitor was King Edward VII who regularly came to enjoy the sea air.

Visitors didn't have to go to the beach to enjoy seawater. Tanks built under the lawns at the bottom of Grand Avenue pumped seawater to the bathrooms of nearby hotels. The seafront today is bordered by Hove's distinctive beach huts. These replaced the earlier bathing tents and machines.
