Paper dolls first became popular in the mid 18th century. The advent of print and mass-produced images played a part in this popularity but homemade paper dolls were equally popular particularly as paper was cheap and scissors became less expensive.
At the end of the 19th century paper dolls were regularly featured in newspapers and women's magazines as well as being used to advertise products.
In the 20th century books of paper dolls were produced and these were often based on celebrities such as Shirley Temple.
