James Gray collection

The Royal Pavilion and Museums can supply images from the well-known James Gray collection, on behalf of the Regency Society.

The James Gray collection is one of the most comprehensive collections of photographs of Brighton & Hove. Gray was a local man who began to collect photographs of Brighton & Hove in the 1950s. His collection grew over 40 years and now consists of more than 7,500 photographs in 39 volumes. On his death in 1998, his collection was acquired by the Regency Society. The entire collection has now been digitised, and can be viewed on the James Gray website.

If you would like to purchase a print or digital image from the collection, or licence a photograph for publication, please email us with the reference numbers of the images you require. Images from the James Gray collection are charged at the same price as those from the Royal Pavilion and Museums' own collections.

Some images in the Gray collection are taken from the Philippe Garner collection; we regret that we will not be able to supply any images marked as originating from this collection.
