Census Material

Census returns for Sussex are available as microfilmed copies. Some material for Kent, London and elsewhere can be accessed in the Brighton History Centre on CD ROM. We also offer free access to the Ancestry website, which provides historic census information for the rest of the United Kingdom.

A census name index is of great help when locating an ancestor. Brighton History Centre has a number of these, which are useful research aids in their own right.

Details of our census holdings can be found on our Handlists page.

Much of this material is available on microfilm and microfiche, so it is advisable to book the appropriate reader in advance. Please contact us to book.
