Schools
Brighton & Hove City Libraries play an important and valuable part in learning and discovery, studying and education. We provide many resources to help children and students with their reading skills, learning and studying opportunities, and further education and career options.
Teachers can
- visit the library with a class of children for a book exchange
- tour the library with a member of the Children’s team
- enjoy a project related activity with a member of the Children's team
- request a visit to their school from a member of library staff
- benefit from tailor-made talks from our Rare Books Manager about our Rare Books & Special Collections section and how school-age children can get involved.
School children can
- join the library for free, both online and at their local library, borrow fiction and non-fiction titles, use reference books and study aids to help at national curriculum key stage level, GCSEs, and A Levels.
- use our library computers free of charge for up to an hour a day to access their library account as well as the internet
- access the library catalogue to search, renew and reserve books, DVDs and music CDs, and access our Virtual Reference Library. There is a special filtering policy for children and young people’s PCs.
- join one of our Chatterbooks groups and meet up with other children of the same age, take part in activities and even win prizes!
- join a Homework Club where we provide a working environment and give help and advice from trained staff on using reference material, access to computers and printing also provided free
- find out about local and family history at the Brighton History Centre
- take part in a school holiday or half-term holiday activity ranging from creative writing and illustration workshops to costume making.
The Discovery and Learning area of our website gives more information for schools and teachers on how the city’s Museums can help at all key stages of National Curriculum learning.
