16th century material - Jubilee Library

The George Long Collection, an extensive private classical library, was donated to the library in 1879 and contains 3,500 volumes, many of which are in Latin and Greek from the 16th century. 

19th century agriculture, commerce, history, philosophy, economics – Jubilee Library

Richard Cobden MP was responsible for the establishment of the Anti-Corn Law League in 1839.  The collection is part of his own personal library, presented to Brighton Library by Henry Willet in 1873.

Art, Architecture & Antiques - Jubilee Library

Covers all aspects of fine and decorative arts and architecture. This includes the Lewis Collection, a bequest of approximately 2,000 books on fine arts written in Russian, French, German and Spanish. 

Book Plate Collections – Jubilee Library/Hove Library

Brighton, Hove & Sussex – Illustrations - Brighton History Centre
An extensive collection on all aspects of Brighton, Hove and Sussex - 6,000 slides, 3,000 postcards and over 32,000 photographs and illustrations from a number of sources.

Brighton in the 19th century – Jubilee Library

The Erredge Collection, donated by John Ackerman Erredge, is a collection of working scrapbooks containing original prints, cuttings and ephemera on 19th century Brighton. 

Children's Books - Jubilee Library

This collection dates from the 18th Century to the 1970's and includes a wide range of literature, fantasies, educational books, comic albums and annuals, fairy tales and biblical stories. 

Early English Newspapers from 1642 – Jubilee Library

These Early English Newspapers date from 1642 to the early 20th century. These are on microform so you will need to book a reader-printer machine at Jubilee Library to view them.  The indexes to the newspapers are kept in the Tony Miller Reading Room, Jubilee Library. At present the microforms are located in our off-site store and need to be ordered in advance.
