Shakespeare - Jubilee Library
The Halliwell-Phillipps Collection contains 1,000 volumes of ‘Shakespeariana’, donated in 1876 by James Halliwell-Phillips. He was an accomplished Shakespeare scholar and donated many rare items throughout his life. He is probably best known for purchasing Shakespeare’s house (Stratford upon Avon) which he then went on to donate to the town.
Slide Collection – Hove Library
Approximately 3,000 slides donated by Ben Harland on a wide range of topographical subjects ranging from East Sussex to the Middle East.
Theology – Jubilee Library
The Elliot Collection, a good example of a working clergyman’s personal library, was the first substantial collection given to the new library in 1871. It consists of over 3,000 theological works, most of which date from the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Trade Union Collection/Underground Press – Hove Library
'The Left in Britain' on microform includes a collection of left wing titles such as ‘Militant’ as well as other journals relating to the early Trade Union movement and Women’s Suffrage. Other titles include Private Eye and Spare Rib. You will need to book a reader-printer machine at Hove Library to view these.
There was also a substantial Brighton & Hove Trade Union Collection given to Brighton Libraries by Andy Durr (ex-mayor of Brighton) which is now housed at East Sussex Records Office.
Wolseley Collection – Hove Library
A large part of the Wolseley Collection consists of the "autograph" letters addressed to Lord Wolseley and his wife, many from people eminent in both the military circles of Victorian society and the arts including Queen Victoria, Leopold, King of Belgium, Sir Winston Churchill, Mark Twain and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It also includes
- letters between Wolseley and his family
- papers dealing with his military and administrative careers
- notebooks, pamphlets, scrapbooks of Victorian ephemera composed by Frances Wolseley
- Frances Wolseley’s multi-volume Sussex Topographies with ephemera on 117 villages and Manor Houses
- Frances Wolseley’s notebooks detailing her horticultural interests, as well as her diaries, and her collection of several thousand bookplates arranged chronologically by country and owner
World War Two - BBC Radio Scripts – Hove Library
Two collections of radio news broadcast scripts covering the periods 1939-1945 (9 o'clock news broadcasts) and 1978-1979 (6 o' clock news broadcasts). These are on microfiche, so you will need to book a reader-printer machine at Hove Library to view them.
