Creative Apprenticeships
The government has launched a new scheme that offers new opportunities for young people to enter the cultural sector.
Creative Apprenticeships offer an alternative route into the creative industries. They are based on ability and potential rather than qualifications, social background or who you know. They aim to break the vicious circle of ‘no experience equals no job’.
At present a small number of education providers and employers have been piloting the apprenticeship. There will be more education providers and employers coming onboard in due course.
The Creative Apprenticeships programme is designed to meet the needs of the creative and cultural sectors. Approved by industry and supported by government, those who would not normally have the chance to work in, for example, music or theatre, are given flexible work-based learning opportunities where they can learn valuable skills and obtain qualifications (GSCE or A-level equivalent) while earning a wage.
Participating employers demonstrate their investment in the future workforce of their sector and benefit from the opportunity to seek out talent, and gain a committed apprentice.
Education providers work closely with the creative industries to ensure that the courses and learning they deliver are relevant to the real world of work.
One of the career paths available through Creative Apprenticeships is in the operation of cultural venues, and this includes working in museums and galleries.
